There’s something so special about watching a sibling bond form right before your eyes—especially when you’ve had the honour of photographing both sisters as newborns, five years apart.

I first met this family when their oldest daughter was just a few days old. I had the joy of capturing her very first portraits, and now, half a decade later, she returned to my home studio—not just as a big sister, but as a proud big sister.

From the moment she walked in, you could see how excited she was to help. She took her role seriously—helping choose headbands, suggesting colours for the sets, and even arranging little props. She was focused, gentle, and so thoughtful in how she interacted with her baby sister. It was clear she was ready to be a helper and a protector.

One of my favourite moments was when she began mimicking her newborn sister. Baby sister would start to drift off, only to pop one eye open—and big sister found this hilarious. She started copying her, squinting and popping one eye open and shut while giggling quietly. It was such a sweet, natural moment of connection between them, and it reminded me just how important it is to include siblings in newborn sessions.

Big sister also spent time telling me stories during the session—about her toys, her favourite colors, and how excited she was to have a little sister to share her world with. She listened so well, followed gentle directions, and made the whole session even more joyful.

These are the kinds of memories that become cherished family treasures. I’m so honoured when families return to me for their growing milestones—it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
